The spirit of Genoa lies precisely in the alleys, where different smells, tastes, languages and cultures mingle.
In the historic center is the Romanesque-style Cathedral of San Lorenzo, with a black-and-white striped facade and frescoed interiors. Narrow streets lead to monumental squares such as Piazza de Ferrari, with its distinctive bronze fountain, and the Carlo Felice opera house.
