Less rain and nicer weather invite you to visit Ameland. Ameland is 25 kilometers long and, at its widest point, 4 kilometers wide. More than 3,500 people live on the island, most of them in one of the four particularly picturesque villages on the island, from west to east: Hollum, Ballum, Nes and Buren.
The old village centers of Hollum, Ballum and Nes are especially worth a visit: here you will find the old and special Commander's houses, once built for whaling captains who lived on Ameland when they were not traveling. You will also find old Amelander farms, nice shops, fascinating galleries, cozy restaurants and attractive cafés. One of the special features of Ameland is that it has a lot of variety in nature to offer in a relatively small area. The North Sea and the beach of course with the dunes behind it. But also the forest, heathland, polder landscape and the Wadden dike with the unique Wadden Sea behind it.

The boats to the Wadden island of Ameland leave from the ferry port in Holwerd, Friesland. If you travel by public transport, you travel from the bus station in Dokkum or the train and bus station in Leeuwarden to Holwerd.
