Coming from Basel, take the St. Gotthard motorway to Locarno on the Swiss side of Lake Maggiore. For the drive to the west bank: continue over the border at Piaggio Valmara on the federal road 34 along the shore of Lake Maggiore. For the drive to the east bank: cross the border at Zenna and then continue on the country road 394.
From Lindau (D)/Bregenz (A), take the S. Bernardino motorway to Locarno (CH) and then proceed as described above.
By plane:
The three airports Malpensa (MXP), Linate (LIN), and Bergamo (BGY) in Milan are served by almost all German airports. Malpensa Airport, being only 20 km away, is the most conveniently located for the southern part of the lake.

Ungepflegt, schmuddelig, abgewohnt
Die Wohnung war ungepflegt; vor allem die alten Matrazen in den Schlafzimmern waren durchgelegen und strömten einen sehr penetranten und unangenhmen Geruch (nach jahrelang aufgesogenen Ausdünstungen ihrer Benutzer) aus, die Kissen auf den Sesseln waren von einer bräunlichen Schmutzschicht überzogen, zwischen den Heizkörpern sammelte sich der Staub mehrere Zentimeter hoch, das Bad war vor unserer Ankunft nur oberflächlich gereinigt worden, einige der Dielenbretter auf dem Balkon waren locker, der Zugang zum Wasser war zugewachsen, ... .
Alles in allem nicht empfehlenswert.
